Read this text about what to do in an emergency. With a partner, discuss what is different in Austria. What should you do no matter where an emergency happens? What to do in an emergency when you are far from home: • Act quickly and stay calm. Make sure that you are safe before you try to help anyone. If not, get to a place where you can safely call an emergency hotline for help. • Take note of your surroundings. Where are you? What happened? Who needs help? Tell the operator of the emergency hotline as much as you can about the situation. • Get injured people away from a dangerous area. If you know first aid, help anyone that you can. If you don’t, just try to make them comfortable until professional help comes. • In the US, dial 911 to be connected to local “first responders”: emergency medical care, fire fighters, and police. An ambulance can bring the patient to the nearest Emergency Room (ER). Less serious conditions can also be treated at the closest Walk-in Clinic, at a pharmacy or an Urgent Care Center . • In the UK, dial 999 for an ambulance. The patient will be taken to the Accident and Emergency Department of a hospital (A&E) or to a Minor Injuries Unit (MIU). Some UK hospitals also have Walk-in Centres , where doctors (GPs) can treat minor injuries and illnesses and write prescriptions. What happens to Johannes?
