When you think of American food, you might immediately think of fast food – but there are lots of different kinds of dining experiences to try. Diners are traditional roadside restaurants. That’s where you can enjoy the slow version of fast food – a milkshake with a burger and fries, or maybe an omelet and black coffee. At a nice restaurant , you tend to sit down at a free-standing table with a tablecloth and use eating utensils (fork, knife and spoon, or even chopsticks). Restaurants may specialize in one kind of food, such as “Tex-Mex” or “health food”, but often they combine different traditions and flavors to create a new kind of cuisine. However, you don’t need a fork and knife to eat a donut and drink a latte. Cafés , coffeehouses and bakeries all serve coffee and pastries, but they are a bit different. Coffeehouses specialize in good coffee, but they may also serve snacks and sandwiches. A café is like a coffeehouse, but it may also serve hot food. Americans also love to meet friends for brunch at cafes on weekends – breakfast and lunch in one meal. At a bakery, the main attractions are the freshly-baked breads and sweets: pastries, muffins, cakes, cupcakes, cookies and donuts. Some bakeries even special- ize in one kind of sweet – like cupcakes.
