Read the text about constructing a brick bond. Then label the picture and find the correct translations. After having finished your foundation, you can start raising your bond. This describes the various styles of laying bricks to create different patterns for stability. To position a bond, lay the bricks in a row. This is called a course. Join the bricks by mortar. The most frequently used mortar is gauged mortar (or limecement mortar), consisting of cement, sand, lime and water. Use one part cement to two parts lime and six parts sand or similar mixtures. The horizontal layers of mortar are called mortar beds. Make sure they are about 1.2 cm thick. The vertical junctions are called ver tical joints or just “joints” and should be around 1.0 cm thick. mortar bed – Lagerfuge vertical joint – Stossfuge courses – Scharen The block bond (English bond) and the stretcher bond are popular types of brickwork. Have a closer look at them and read how they are constructed. In a stretcher bond pattern the stretchers are laid lengthways. Each brick overlaps the one below by a half. Every second course begins with half a brick. In the first course of a block bond pattern, the stretchers are placed lengthways. The row starts with two threequarter bricks. The second course consists of headers that are placed sideways.
