Read the following text and learn more about an insulators work. Insulation reduces the energy consumption of public buildings and industrial plants. The pipes are coated with appropriate insulation materials such as flexible elastomeric foam or mineral wool, which is a fibrous material also used for sound insulation. Rock wool and cellular glass are more insulation materials. All of them are poor heat conductors, therefore heat flow and the heat loss can be reduced. Depending on the temperature of the pipes and vessels, different insulation materials with an appropriate max- imum application temperature are used. The more difficult work is the production of the sheet metal cladding. It is intended to protect the insulation from weather and mechanical damage. The sheet metal cladding is made of 0.6 mm thick aluminium sheet which is fixed by swages, and screws or rivets along the longitud- inal seams. A reduction of heat loss also leads to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, which are created each time fossil fuels such as coal or gas are burnt and which in turn is responsible for global warming.
