Read about the manufacturing process of cement. Many people confuse the word cement and concrete. Cement is a binder in the process of making concrete. The action begins at the limestone quarry. At this stage, the limestone can be as big as a piano. Crushers reduce it to the size of ping pong balls. From there huge trucks transport the rocks to a cement factory nearby. In a grinding machine the rocks become a powder called raw meal and sometimes extra minerals are added, such as silicate and iron. The raw meal then goes into a pre-heater and moves on to a cylindrical furnace with temperatures up to 1500°C. There, it fuses into pieces, a process called sintering, and becomes clinker. It is cooled quickly to get quality cement. The last stage of the manufacture is called final grinding: The clinker is transformed into the powder we know as cement and several admixtures like flue ash, blast furnace slag or gypsum are added making it a special type of cement according to European Stand- ards.
