Read the following text and learn about concrete basics. Concrete is a composite material. Its components are cement aggregate and water. Aggregate may consist of coarse aggregate (like gravel), fine aggregate (like sand) and other admixtures according to a specification given by the structural engineer. The most common type of concrete is Portland cement concrete. We’ll have a closer look at cement later on. By mixing all the components together, a semi-liquid mass is produced that can be shaped and poured into forms. At this stage, concrete offers great flexibility and workability. When producing concrete, cement reacts chemically with water (hydration). Thus concrete sets by “getting wet!” Finally, a building material is created that has characteristics similar to stone. Most supporting building parts are made with reinforced concrete. This is concrete in which steel elements like steel bars or steel rod mats are included. By doing so it can bear heavy loads and build- ing parts can be connected. Find the English meanings of the words in the text above. Answer the following questions. 1. Which components does concrete consist of? 2. Can you explain “hydration”? 3. He was quite surprised to learn that the ancient Romans had already been heavy users of an early kind of concrete technology and had even managed to build huge concrete domes without reinforcement. Do you know a building from that period, which was made of concrete? 112 Unit 26 Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
