What do you think, which step comes first? 1 2 3 4 piece of pig iron blast furnace transport iron ore mining Read the following text about a blast furnace and its pig iron production. A blast furnace consists of two cone-shaped hollow blocks, one on top of the other, made of fireproof stonework, held together by a steel casing. Its height can be 30–80m and its diameter between 14–20m. The main parts are: 1. the blast furnace top with blanking plug 2. the chamber 3. the carbon-sack 4. bosh and ring line for hot air 5. the frame. In the blast furnace, iron ore is transformed into pig iron through reduction. The starting product to produce pig iron is ore. This iron ore does not exist in its pure form in nature – it is always a chem- ical compound. The most important iron ore is magnetic iron ore. In order to produce pig iron from iron ore, it is necessary to pre-process the iron ore by breaking up the rough pieces of ore into smaller pieces that fit into the blast furnace and by blasting with hot air, a thermal pre-processing method that reduces or eliminates unwanted elements such as water, carbon dioxide and sulphur. 01 A2 blast furnace iron ore mining  transport piece of pig iron 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 02 A2–B1 Word bank 01 blast furnace Hochofen ore Eisenerz pig iron Roheisen 02 cone-shaped kegelförmig steel casing Stahlmantel blanking plug Gichtverschluss chamber Schacht carbon-sack Kohlensack bosh Rast ring line Ringleitung frame Gestell reduction Reduktion compound Verbindung magnetic iron ore Magneteisenstein carbon dioxide Kohlendioxid sulphur Schwefel Blast furnace David is very excited. He sends a message to his British friend Patrick he met last summer on holiday in Italy. What do you know about these places? No idea what you are talking about!!!!!????? We are going to spend 2 days in Styria visiting a blast furnace. Our boss also promised to visit the Voest Alpine Stahl Donawitz GmbH. We will do a guided tour through the company. On the way back we will stop at the famous “Erzberg”. Can’t wait … J 88 Unit 17 Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
