Take turns and then compare your results in class. A turning lathe produces work pieces with  circular shapes from a range of materials including steels and plastics. In a turning lathe the work piece is turning. Types of turning lathes are:  universal lathe  ,  vertical turning and drilling machine (carousel lathe)  ,  multi-spindle lathe  , CNC machines. Basic data of a turning lathe include the  distance between spindle centres  , the  drive power  , the  spindle opening and the  spindle speed  . A universal lathe is for individual and job lot production, repairing and tool making. A CNC machine is used for series production. A vertical turning and drilling machine is used for large and heavy work pieces and a multi spindle lathe for mass production. A milling machine produces flat materials. In a milling machine the  multi-blade tool  , the milling cutter, makes circular movements. The production of areas, slots,  notches  , and steps depends on the  milling cutter  . Usually the work piece carries out the  feed motion  . Grinding machines such as universal grinders and special grinders are for industrial production. They sharpen tools and smooth surfaces. There are three ways of grinding: circular grinding , face grinding and polish grinding depending on the design of the work piece surface. For grinding a chisel or a drill by hand a  floor stand grinder  is required, more accur- ate tools require a tool-grinding machine. For separating and  deburring  , a universal angle grinder can be used.
