Water-jet cutter A water-jet cutter is an industrial tool capable of cutting a wide variety of materials using a very high-pressure jet of water – in some cases a mixture of water and an abrasive substance. Water-jet cutting is often used during fabrication of machine parts. It’s the preferred method espe- cially when the materials being cut are sensitive to high temperatures, generated by other methods. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1) high-pressure water inlet 2) juwel 3) abrasive substance 4) mixing tube 5) guard 6) cutting water jet 7) cut material The cutter is connected to a high-pressure water pump. The water is then ejected from the nozzle, cutting through the material by spraying it with a jet of high-speed water. Abrasives assist this process. An important advantage of the water-jet is the ability to cut material without interfering with its inherent structure. For cutting hard metals the water pressure can be as high as approximately 3,800 bar. The diameter of the nozzle is between 0.025 and 0.035 cm. The maximum speed at which water passes through the nozzle is 3,000 km/hour. Materials up to a thickness of 1 cm can be cut at a speed of approximately 15 cm/minute. What does a water-jet cutter use? It uses a very high pressure and a mixture of water and abrasive substances. What is the advantage of cutting with a water-jet cutter? The ability to cut material without interfering with its inherent structure. Mosaic There are three errors in the picture on the left.
