Some spam is a scam to get your bank account or credit card number. Phishing sites can find out your email address from other websites. Sometimes trustworthy people ask for help online, too. Phishing is one reason why having virus protection is important for companies. The Prince of Saskatchewan is definitely a real person. You should never use your credit card to buy something online. Read the following text. Then, act out how you would feel in the situation with a partner. Choose to be any person (or company) who appears in the text. Hate speech: a big mistake During a July heatwave, a smiling six-year-old was photographed playing in a sprinkler that local firefighters set up for kids living at a refugee shelter. The children had escaped a terrible war, but this was a happy moment. The little girl’s picture was posted by the newspaper online. An apprentice from Upper Austria commented “Flamethrowers would have been a better solution”. His employer read the hateful comment and promptly ended the young man’s apprenticeship at the company. The former apprentice apologized and said that his comment was a “big mistake” – but one he had to pay for. With a partner, discuss a situation in which you were a bully. Who did you bully? What did you do? Why did you do it? What was the outcome? Create a poster warning students and their parents of a dangerous situation. What might parents not understand about the situation? What should students be aware of? What should be ignored, mediated, discussed or confronted?
