Tell a story: Form a group of 4–6 students. Your teacher will give your group a small ball of wool or string. When you hold the ball of wool, it is your turn to talk about yourself. After you talk about yourself, pass the “storytelling wool” to the student of your choice. • When you unwind the wool, talk about your expectations and goals when you started your apprenticeship. • When you wind up the wool, talk about your personal soft skills. Read the following article and discuss it with your class. The daily grind – Have you ever experienced one of these situations? Working is not always easy. Even though you might take pride in what you do, it can still be quite hard to deal with the daily grind . Sometimes the daily grind can get the best of good workers and they make mistakes, like in the following situations: 1. Your boss gave you instructions, but when you started to do the job, you forgot what you had to do. 2. Oops! It was impossible to stop or hide the fact that you were responsible for something that went wrong … so you just stood there watching it happen. 3. Following the safety procedures is annoying. They double the work involved in doing a simple job. 4. Sometimes, deadlines are simply impossible to meet! 5. Your colleagues are really hard to relate to. You just don’t know what to say to them. What do you think “daily grind” means?  Daily work challenges With a partner, discuss what you would do in each situation for the best possible outcome. Then discuss your ideas with your class. Create five short “good advice” sentences about what you should do in a difficult situation at work. Individual answers, e. g.: 1. Ask for help. 2. Apologize to a supervisor and ask for help. 3. Make safety your routine. 4. Manage your time as well as possible. 5. Ask your colleagues about themselves. Maybe they will get more relatable with time. (relating to 1.–5. in the article) Create a presentation or flyer explaining how not to be promoted as an apprentice! Be sure to give terrible advice that a real apprentice should never follow. Write about the “daily grind” in your workplace, but also about any positive aspects.
