85 4.4.3 How to write your personal error/revision chart An error/revision chart is your personal list of language problems, which you want to eliminate. •• Collect errors from the texts which have been corrected by your teacher and write each one on a separate line. •• Go through this list before you start writing. •• Use the list for proofreading after you have completed your first draft. •• Revise the list regularly and change it when necessary. •• Delete items from your list if the error does not come up in your texts any more. Your list should not be too long. •• Also put things on the list which you want to remember, e.g. forms of salutation, signal words for the past tense. Example: Errors much water – many cookies English, German, French yesterday, last night, last week, last year g past tense Dear Mr Moreley, … g Yours sincerely, … Example: Useful language for revision synonyms of “nice”: acceptable, agreeable, amusing, charming, delightful, enjoyable, friendly, genial, good, good-natured, likeable, marvellous, pleasant, satisfying, … 4.4.4 Editing and revising Editing and revising is necessary to improve the quality of your texts. Follow these steps: •• Link the sentences with appropriate linking words (e.g. because, when, while, although, if, in order to ). •• In the process replace words or phrases which are repeated. •• Do not use sentences with the same structure too often. •• Replace simple adjectives (e.g. good, bad, nice ) with more descriptive ones. •• Read through your new version carefully and check if your text sounds better after editing. •• Do not overcomplicate the text. Keep your texts simple and clear. Editing: From active to passive and vice versa When editing a text, try to change the sentence structure. Change active sentences into the passive and passive sentences into active ones. Active Passive The company produces T-shirts in Thailand. g T-shirts are produced by this company in Thailand. 1.
