4 62 Assessment Topic sentences Topic sentences give you an overview of a paragraph. Read the ones in the table carefully, then match them with the paragraphs below and write them down. There is one sentence which you should not use. Christmas has proved to be the most difficult time of the year for people without a place to stay. However, most of these problems are the fault of the people concerned and no further assistance is needed. In spite of all the state-run programmes to help the homeless, it is charities like Shelter who often provide help when it is most needed, especially in emergencies. So, in addition to providing the basics, Shelter also offers advice on how to find a place to live. 1 The main focus of the charity Shelter is to help people in need, especially homeless people. What is most striking, however, is the sheer number of people who are affected by homelessness. Making a difference 1. They are among the most vulnerable members of our society. That is why Shelter tries to provide them with essentials like food, free showers, laundry services and healthcare. This is especially important because about 150 families in Britain become homeless every single day. 2. Around this time of the year, numerous volunteers work hard to make this season a pleasant experience for their clients. They prepare food and drinks in the soup kitchens of the organisation or they take their time and talk to the people who come and look for help. A lot of people even support charities like Shelter by giving regular donations because they just want to make a difference. 3. The problems often start when people lose their jobs and cannot pay their bills any more. Soon they are evicted from their flats or houses because they cannot afford them any more. As housing is very expensive in Britain, many of them end up on the streets, especially when they are old and single. 4. Experts give advice on how to rent a flat or to find shared accommodation. In many cases people do not even know that they are entitled to claim housing benefit, which could make their situation easier. 5. Supporting them is therefore an important contribution to our society. And luckily there are numerous people who volunteer to help at times like Christmas.
