Traditional sports activities are just not good enough anymore. B However, these risks are not just a problem for individual people, they also cause considerable problems for the communities concerned. People who have suffered near-fatal injuries are often handicapped for the rest of their lives. As a consequence, there needs to be somebody to look after and care for them, which can be a huge financial burden for families and communities. C Bungee jumping is one of these free-time activities which has become very popular in recent years. Others want to experience the cold of Antarctica or the thrill of free-riding in winter. Instead of skiing in a fairly safe and regulated environment they prefer to ski off-piste without any set course or rules. D In addition, people who had such accidents are often not able to provide for themselves. Unless they were well insured, it is their families, the community or the state that has to care for them. These people do not just damage their own lives, but also the well-being of the people around them. E It seems that the activity itself is not the most attractive aspect. It is rather the risk involved that causes fun or at least makes it possible to boast about it. In some cases, people are prepared to put their lives at risk just to experience what they can obviously not experience in their boring lives. F One of the reasons why people find such thrills attractive is certainly the fact that we live in a very regulated society. Instead of teaching people how to take responsibilities we are faced with strict rules that cover the best part of our lives. Health and safety warnings can be found everywhere, and we think we only have to stick to them in order to be safe. In addition, the media give us the impression that true fun means taking risks, sometimes even beyond reason. G What could be done, however, to prevent long-lasting problems that originate from such activities? First and foremost, young people need to learn to take responsibility for whatever they do and that the consequences are not just their individual problem. Such steps could already be taken at kindergarten level. Only then will people realise that they have to take responsibility not just for themselves.
