TravelPeers , a magazine for teenage travellers, has asked readers to send in articles which describe the most recent trends in tourism from their point of view. You have decided to take part. In your article you should: • describe what traditional tourists can experience in Europe • discuss new trends, especially for the young • explain why communities support these new trends in tourism. Give your article a title . Write around 200 words . Sample article Over the last few decades our lifestyle has changed from a distinct and diverse way of life characteristic of the various cultures in Europe to a more unified one-fits-all model as we can see it in the US. European cities, which were once easily distinguishable from each other, are becoming less and less typical. Traditional architecture often only serves as a backdrop for multinational businesses. Whether you go shopping in Barcelona or Prague, in Berlin or in Rome, the shops and restaurants, the hotels are nearly the same, look the same and offer the same goods and services. For many people this means that travelling has lost its attraction. However, tourism is much more than just going shopping or eating out. That is why a lot of communities are trying to create spaces where visitors can experience something unique. Concert halls, museums, theatres or sports venues spring up all over Europe to boost the image of these places and to become modern tourist attractions. This also coincides with another growing trend in tourism. Instead of travelling to an interesting place for sightseeing, modern tourism puts a strong emphasis on events to make a visit more memorable and also more distinguishable from other trips. That is why trips to London or New York to take part in the city marathon or to watch a famous tennis tournament are becoming more and more popular. What is so attractive for communities to put on such exceptional events is that people who take part in them tend to spend more money, as they are usually better off and can afford more than backpackers who have to make ends meet. Altogether this form of tourism seems to be a growing trend in the coming years. 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 Growing trends in tourism Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des V rlags öbv
