Many schools nowadays fight with major issues between students, such as bullying, stealing and fighting. Of course, CCTV can be used to help resolve conflicts by showing how a fight really began. Apart from that, vandalism is a big problem in many schools costing the government hundreds of thousands of pounds each year. It’s a good point that cameras can keep people from destroying school property because they will clearly show who has done it. There is no reason why we should allow vandals to get away with it. Ms Richardson is absolutely right when she writes that CCTV has advantages for teachers and staff too, especially when it’s not clear if teachers acted correctly in cases of fighting among students. However, it is absolutely clear that CCTV cannot solve each and every problem. If people want to break the rules, they will find ways to do that. In my view, CCTV provides a solution for the most common problems in schools. We have to make sure, however, that the system is not abused by those who have access to it and that the privacy of students, teachers and other school personnel is protected. This can be done for example by developing guidelines for the use of CCTV with teachers, students and parents. In addition, we have to take measures to make pupils, parents and teachers aware that issues like theft, violence and vandalism cannot be accepted, neither in nor outside school.
