When it has appeared in the year 1719, it was in every respect a great success. Although a few people nowadays have read the book all the way through, everyone has heard of the shipwrecked sailor who manages it to survive on a remote island. Written by Daniel Defoe, it is supposed to have been inspired by then the true story of Alexander Selkirk. Selkirk was a sailor who argued with the captain of the ship what he was sailing on about whether it was safe. He then chose to leave the ship and stay behind on an island rather than risk drowning. As it turned unfortunately out, Selkirk had been right because the ship later sank. It is known that Defoe and Selkirk met instead, so it is more than likely that the novel is indeed based on Selkirk’s experience. However, Selkirk was being rescued after just over four years on his island, while Robinson Crusoe, the fictional character, is cut off hardly from civilisation for 28 years. And since there are several other differences between Selkirk’s story and that about Crusoe. Despite of the fact that Defoe obviously used his imagination as well as the real-life adventure of Selkirk, Selkirk’s adventure is general acknowledged as being the main source of inspiration.
