59 6 The UN Declaration is a major milestone, but it won’t succeed without the support of people everywhere The UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples is a major milestone in solidarity between indigenous peoples and the global community. It grants indigenous people all international human rights that other people enjoy and protects them against discrimination. Moreover, it ensures them the right to determine their own political status, allowing them to either govern themselves within a country but also assume its citizenship. The Declaration also forces countries around the world to support its indigenous peoples in what they decide to do and forbids countries to keep them from living freely. However, there are significant gaps between the formal recognition of indigenous rights and realities on the ground.
