LANGUAGE IN USE 6 How the royals became cool If you’re a (0) (visit) to London, you’ll probably want to see Buckingham Palace and may hope to catch a glimpse of the royal family, whether it be Queen Elizabeth, her son Prince Charles, or his sons Princes William and Harry. They are the ultimate British tradition and many people, both in the UK and abroad, find them (1) (interest) . However, over the years there have been calls for the monarchy to be abolished. Some people (2) (like) it and have said it’s too old- fashioned and outdated, others have argued that the amount of money spent on the royals is (3) (disturb) . Many people are (5) (surprise) about this, so how have the ‘young royals’ in the shape of Prince William, his wife Kate and his brother Prince Harry brought the royal family up to date? Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond says, “The young royals are making the monarchy enormously cool. Princes William and Harry are seen as being down-to-earth regular guys, and the Duchess of Cambridge is supposedly one of us.” The branding of Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, really is key to the (6) (create) of this new image. She is simultaneously the future queen and the world’s hottest magazine cover girl. She is famous for recycling her outfits by wearing them multiple times and for buying her clothes from high-street shops. Her husband William, next in line for the throne after Prince Charles, spent years in (7) (act) as a helicopter pilot for the air ambulance service. Prince Harry, who had an (8) (excite) army career, admits to having ‘a naughty streak’, but he has said he tries hard to maintain (9) (normal) by doing his own supermarket shopping.
