LANGUAGE IN USE 1 Unit 12 | The future of … The gap year Many British students take a ‘gap year’ from full-time (0) (educate) between leaving school and going to university. Some take casual jobs in (1) (shop) , hotels or restaurants for a few months in order to earn enough for an extended holiday. Backpacking is a very popular and adventurous but also cheap option because many (2) (study) can only afford to travel on local buses and trains and stay in hostels. Australia and New Zealand are the (3) (favour) destinations, with stops in India and Thailand on the way.  Voluntary (i.e. unpaid) work on educational or conservation projects is another option. Opportunities range from helping out in school classrooms or local leisure centres to working in aids or leprosy clinics far away from home.
