31 industrial waste that is generated as a result of production is being dumped into oceans, depositing harmful chemicals and killing many underwater organisms. The effects of globalisation on culture are also marked. Global technology can be empowering for various cultures as it allows self-representation and information-sharing on a whole new level. Higher visibility of cultural groups, in films for example, allows social and political power that has previously not been seen. However, globalisation has had negative impacts on cultural diversity, including the influence multinational corporations have on promoting a certain consumer culture, exploitation of workers and markets and influencing societal values. The increased availability of commercial media and products can ‘drown out’ local cultural influences. Also, unprecedented access to a range of different cultures means possible misrepresentation, stereotyping and the risk of loss of cultural and intellectual property rights. Loss of individualism and group identity occur when globalisation encourages a ‘Western ideal of individualism’ which promotes a homogeneous set of values and beliefs. The solution to these problems lies in developing effective mechanisms that can control the impact of globalisation on the environment and on societies. Political priorities should focus on better support for and retraining of those put at a disadvantage by globalisation, as technology makes old jobs obsolete and is transforming the world of work. Steps should be taken to focus on gender inclusion, migrant integration, social equality and strengthening ties between rural and urban areas, to name but a few. These large-scale problems require new kinds of partnership, cross-border collaboration and open innovation. We need to rebuild social trust and connections across the lines that divide us. Competent governments, acting in partnership and unlocking the potential of rapid technological advance and deepening regional economic integration, can overcome some of the growing contradictions of globalisation, even as the world enters an uncertain period of demographic change and a sharpening contrast between economic winners and losers. 0 A positive effect of globalisation is that many poor people are . no longer in poverty 1 The effect of globalisation on countries across the globe is that they . 2 Now, many domestic goods are . 3 When companies find cheaper labour abroad, it usually means that . 4 The US and China are the two countries that . 5 Nationalistic political parties gain followers because . 6 The expansion of transcontinental transport has caused . 7 Being exposed to many different cultures can result in problems if people .
