Here are some of the comments we received from our regular readers concerning last week’s question: What do you think the future of food will look like? Zahid, 31 vegan knight I believe the future is meatless. Everybody knows that meat consumption is one of the main drivers of global warming and part of an entirely unsustainable lifestyle. It is the reason why Western societies suffer from obesity, high cholesterol levels and heart disease. So, veganism or vegetarianism are the only real choices here. After all, we can get large quantities of nutrients from fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. And sooner or later, people around the world will consume algae and seaweed, therefore eliminating the need to eat fish in order to get their unsaturated fats. We don’t need to kill animals in order to survive, and it’s time people realised that. Sam, 17 hamburger addict I simply don’t want to give up hamburgers. They’re my favourite food and a central piece of my culture. But I’m not worried because I’ve recently read this article about some scientists in Europe who are working on a slaughter-free hamburger. They’re actually growing edible tissues in a laboratory using cow stem cell research. That means in the future there won’t be a question whether or not we should eat meat. The meat will be ethical, free from antibiotics and tasty. I just hope they get the price down soon because at the moment it’s about $15 for one hamburger patty. Lee, 45 muscle dude I’m a professional bodybuilder, meaning I consume a lot of protein in order to gain muscle mass. I’m not a foodie. I mainly see food as fuel for my body, so it doesn’t particularly matter to me what kind of food I eat, provided it is high in protein and not processed. If in the future I don’t get my nutrients from lean chicken breast but instead from grasshoppers, wasps, worms, ants and spiders, I won’t care. In fact, my wife hates spiders, so I’ll be doing her a favour getting rid of those little beasts. Which options might the authors have chosen in the quiz on the left page?
