98 Unit 06 | The choice is yours Read the chronological events from Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet . Consider the phrases in bold and make sure you know what they mean. READING 22 Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet come from (1) very wealthy families in Verona who have been feuding for as long as anyone can remember. Recently there have been three street fights! 1 A (5) daring Romeo climbs over the walls into Juliet’s family garden. He is (6) extremely brave risking being killed if caught. This is the balcony scene! He and Juliet declare their love for one another. They decide to get married the next day. 3 Juliet’s cruel, aggressive cousin Tybalt is (9) very angry . He thinks it was (10) disgraceful of Romeo to go to the party and wants to fight him. He ends up killing Romeo’s friend Mercutio instead. This is (11) terrible as Romeo then kills Tybalt and is banished from Verona. Romeo and Juliet spend one night together. Then Romeo has to leave. 5 The couple are married by Friar Lawrence, who hopes Romeo and Juliet’s marriage will bring peace. They have to be (7) careful as their parents know nothing about it. It would cause a (8) huge fuss! Besides, Juliet’s father is trying to marry her to a rich young nobleman, Paris. 4 Juliet’s father throws an (2) awesome masked ball. Romeo and his friends gatecrash the par ty. Romeo falls in love at first sight with (3) beautiful Juliet. She feels the same. Then they become (4) aware that they come from opposing families. U h-oh! 2 Juliet’s father tells her she has to marry Paris. A (12) defiant Juliet refuses. Friar Lawrence tries to help, giving Juliet a drink which removes any (13) clear signs of life. She drinks it, goes to sleep, but looks dead. Her family believe she’s dead and bury her in the family tomb. She’s meant to wake up hours later, then run away with Romeo, but Romeo doesn’t get the letter telling him she’s not really dead. Poor Romeo! 6 Romeo arrives at Juliet’s grave, takes an extremely (14) harmful drink and dies. Minutes too late, she is suddenly (15) awake , finds her beloved Romeo dead and kills herself with a dagger. Everyone arrives at the tomb to find the tragic scene. The heartbroken families decide to forget their feud and live peacefully. 7 With a partner, discuss whether you think Romeo and Juliet did the right thing by keeping their relationship a secret. At which points in the plot could they have handled their situation differently so that the story had a happy ending?
