LANGUAGE IN USE 37 a Where your pets are stored on a plane Driving with a dog or cat in the car can be a major hassle. What happens if there’s a (0) jam? What if Fido needs to go for a walk? What if Mr Bigglesworth coughs up a hairball? If you’ve ever (1) such adventures, the idea of taking your pet with you onto an airplane might sound like a (2) at 10,668 meters. However, most airlines allow passengers to travel with their pets. In fact, an (3) two million pets and other animals take to the skies each year in the United States alone. Pets, however, aren’t people. They may be the love of your life, but (4) an airplane, they generally fall into one of three different (5) : carry-on baggage, checked baggage or cargo. Remember (6) can be a dangerous and stressful undertaking for a pet. Most airlines recommend that a pet be at least eight weeks old before it flies. But even if your pet is a healthy adult, it might not be a good idea to take it on a plane. If you choose to bring your pet along as checked baggage, it will travel under the same conditions as those shipped as (7) , alone, between bags and suitcases in the hold. In many airplane models, the cargo area takes up the level directly beneath the passenger cabins. While this area is temperature-controlled, other parts of the (8) may not be, so travelling can still be dangerous for pets. However, if you bring it along as a carry-on baggage, the lucky cat or dog will get to experience the same flying (9) as you do. The only difference is that while you get to sit back in your seat and (10) on peanuts, your furry friend will have to remain inside its carrier box for the whole flight. If your pet happens to bark or meow a lot in small spaces, be prepared to suffer some (11) looks from your fellow passengers. Of course, for the truly spoiled pet, private planes are always a pricier alternative.
