READING 31 a The southeast African country of Mozambique is home to more than 27 million people. In the early 16 th century Portugal took over the Arab trading posts along the coast and established a colony dealing in gold and slaves from areas further inland. After gaining its independence from Portugal in 1975, the country descended into civil war, bringing widespread devastation and the death of more than one million of its inhabitants. Since the end of the conflict in 1992, the country has begun to rebuild and establish a multi-party democracy. In 1995 it joined the Commonwealth as the first country that had not been part of the British Empire. Today, it is still one of the world’s poorest countries, with a GNI per capita 2 of 420 US$ in 2017 (Austria: 45,440 US$). b You are going to watch part of a BBC documentary about a building in Mozambique.
