The language below the table will help you to describe and analyse charts. Which of the details are really relevant? Talk about details only if they are significant, and group similar things. What major differences or changes does the chart/ graph show? B What are possible reasons for the differences or changes? What do the results/trends tell you about the topic or the participants of the survey? Why and for whom are they relevant? Can you give a future outlook? C What kind of chart (bar chart/pie chart/line graph) is it? What is the survey about? What information is given on the participants of the survey? What do the different sections of the graph refer to? Starting: The chart shows/depicts/gives an overview of/illustrates/highlights/ deals with/compares … Pointing out the significance of the information given: There has been a dramatic change …; In comparison to …, the number of … has fallen considerably; There is a remarkable difference between … and …; The number of … is certainly impressive … Describing numbers (e.g. percent): A large proportion; a significant majority; a small number; only a minority; approximately two thirds; almost half; just over a third; exactly a quarter; only one in ten; more/less than a fifth … Describing change: The numbers increase/go up/climb/reach a peak … The numbers decrease/go down/fall/decline … The numbers don’t change/remain stable/remain steady/stay constant … Work with a partner to describe the following charts/graphs.
