186 WRITING COACH An article is an independent piece of writing usually published in an (online) magazine and read by a specific audience who is interested in the topic. It can be serious or amusing using lively and expressive language. Its purpose is to inform, entertain, convince, persuade or simply captivate the reader. To attract the readers’ attention, the article needs to have a catchy title which gives them an idea of what it is about. This can be a question or a surprising/provocative statement. The readership should be involved with direct or rhetorical questions, imperatives and exclamations. The article may include descriptions, anecdotes, examples and the writer’s opinion if appropriate. The ending should give the readers the feeling that they have not wasted their time reading it. It could be a question, an answer to a question or a summary. It could also give them something to think about or encourage them to take action. Write an introduction that pulls the reader right in. Involve your readership. Use lively and expressive language. Link the paragraphs: The reader should never lose interest in what you are writing. Finish your article by giving the reader something to think about. A report is a document that gives clear information on facts, projects, incidents or events and is based on evidence and research. It is written for an institution, an authority or a person in charge who has asked the writer to submit such a document. It is clearly structured, making use of sections and headings so that the information is easy to follow. A report uses formal and polite language.
