READING 20 SPEAKING 21 WRITING 22 By the way: Sports in Ireland In Ireland, Gaelic games lie at the heart of who the Irish are and what it is to be Irish. The games are truly unique and exciting, and visitors to Ireland are fascinated by them. The two main Gaelic games are Gaelic football and hurling. In a conventional game of football, what would the referee say if a player picked up the ball and ran with it? The whistle would be blown and the player penalised 3 . However, in Gaelic football, both hands and feet can be used by the players to control the ball. Moreover, the teams consist of 15 people on each side, and goal-scoring is also very different to the football you are probably used to. Getting the ball over the bar of the H-shaped goal gets one point, and getting it under the bar scores three points. Another uniquely Irish game is hurling, which is one of the world’s oldest field sports and has been played in some form in Ireland for more than 800 years. The women’s version of the game is known as ‘camogie’. The game is often compared to field hockey, but other than the fact that both games involve a stick and a ball, there is no similarity. Some people have called it a mixture of hockey and war! The curved wooden stick with a flat end is known as a ‘hurl’ or ‘hurley’, or, in Irish, a ‘camán’ (pronounced ‘come-awn’) and is made from a single piece of wood. The ball, or ‘sliothar’ (pronounced ‘shlit-her’) is about the size of a tennis ball and is covered in leather. As well as striking the ball with the hurley, players can kick or hit it with their hand. An impressive hurling skill is the ability to bounce or balance the ball on the hurl while running at full speed before finally flipping it high into the air and whacking it over or under the H-shaped crossbar. It’s no wonder that players usually wear protective helmets these days! The other two Gaelic games are rounders and Gaelic handball. Every weekend club matches of all these sports are played in towns and villages all over Ireland, with the biggest Gaelic football and hurling games regularly attracting crowds of over 40,000 viewers. Do you know any sports that are only played in our part of the world? How could you describe them to people who have never seen them before? 3 to be penalised: bestraft werden Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
