There are an estimated 370 million indig- enous people in the world, living across 90 countries. Indigenous people make up more than 10 percent of the world’s population. They speak over 40 percent of the estimated 6,700 languages used around the world. And most of them are in danger of disappearing as the younger generations often do not learn their traditional language anymore. The sporting event ‘World Indigenous Games’ was held for the first two times in 2015 and 2017. Some of the disciplines include football, archery, canoeing, road bicycle racing, darts, spear throwing, log races and swimming. The competitors don’t wear sports attire but compete barefoot and wearing body paint. Indigenous communities thrive by living in harmony with the environment. Research shows that where indigenous groups have control of the land, forests and biodiversity grow and develop successfully. Their lifestyles in much of the world’s tropical rainforests are more harmful and threaten- ing to the environment than the lifestyles of industrialised countries. Look at the pictures below.
