79 Hollywood Most people in the world are familiar with Hollywood films. They are an important medium for spreading American culture and the English language across the globe. People watch films in the original English version and thus learn the language through this popular form of entertainment. Read the article about Hollywood below. The weather was good all year round and the sunlight was reliable. They could easily access a range of settings with the coast, forests and the desert all close by. Many filmmakers then moved from New York to California. B There has been increasing concern about the lack of ethnic diversity in performers being nominated for and winning Oscars. In 2015 and 2016 all of those nominated for acting awards were white. Up until 2016 only 6% of the acting nominations went to non-white actors, which led to the #OscarsSoWhite protest movement. This began in 2015 and aimed to highlight the differences between the number of white and non-white people nominated for awards. C  Hollywood! What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the name? You probably think of films, celebrities and glamour. Hollywood must be one of the best-known places on earth, but how did it become the home of the film industry? A part of Los Angeles, it used to be called ‘Hollywoodland’ until 1949. The first film in Hollywood was made in 1910. D  Later in the 20 th century, filmmaking progressed and thousands were produced in Hollywood. Many of them have become worldfamous, such as Gone with the Wind , Avatar and the Star Wars series, to name just a few. Films can cost hundreds of millions of dollars to produce, for instance, Pirates of the Caribbean : At World’s End cost an enormous $300 million! E  In 2016, actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith boycotted the ceremony and were joined by director Spike Lee. They wanted to make a stand and campaign for more people from ethnic minorities to be both judges and nominees at the Oscars. Many other actors spoke out about this issue, such as George Clooney and Reese Witherspoon. The term ‘whitewash’ was used to describe the white majority deciding and winning the Oscars. It remains to be seen if their protests make a change in the future. F  So filmmaking is clearly big business. The huge sums of money and the reputation of Hollywood have drawn the finest directors, producers and actors. Since 1929, successful films and those involved in making them have been recognised with the Academy Awards, otherwise known as the ‘Oscars’. These are presented in a special ceremony each year.
