184 STRATEGIES OVERVIEW Listening – Multiple choice (MC) Listening – Four-word sentence completion/Four-word answers (4W) Language in use – Word formation (WF) Language in use – Editing (ED) Language in use – Open gap fill (OGF) Language in use – Multiple choice (MC) Underline keywords in the questions – they can help your brain listen for the right information. You may hear keywords from all four options, but only one answer is absolutely correct. Don’t choose an option just because you hear a word from it – make sure that it means the same as your answer. While reading the task, think about what the answer could be: do you need a name, a number, a feeling? This helps your brain identify the correct information while listening. Don’t write more than four words. Don’t worry too much about grammar, your answer only has to be clear. Read the sentences carefully to find out what kind of word (noun, verb, etc.) you need to complete the gaps. You always have to change the word in bold; it is never correct. Make sure that the new word fits the gap in terms of meaning and grammar – and that it is spelt correctly! Read the instructions carefully because the number of correct lines can vary. Read the text slowly and word for word. Don’t stop reading at the end of a line, read the whole sentence. Look for short words like prepositions, modal verbs or adverbs. Long content words like bedroom or electronic are usually correct. Reading a difficult line from right to left can help. The first and last word of a line are never wrong. A word that is in the line more than once is never wrong either. Every gap must be filled with exactly one word. Contractions such as don’t or I’m count as one word. For many gaps, there is more than one possible answer. If you can’t think of a word right away, the structure of the sentence can help you. For example, think about what kind of word (noun, verb, preposition, …) could fit. Make sure you use the right form of the word. A noun can be singular or plural, a verb might need a suffix for the third person singular or the past. The options can test you on both vocabulary and grammar. The correct answer is the right word in the correct form. It can be helpful to think about what you could fill in before you look at the options. Language in use – Banked gap fill (BGF) This task type is similar to Reading – Multiple matching (sentence parts) , but you need to match single words or short phrases, so it tests your grammar and vocabulary skills more than your reading skills. While reading, think of a word that could fit, then check the words in the bank. Which one comes closest to your idea? Language in use Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
