178 WRITING COACH Sample task The school magazine of your English partner school has started a series of articles on creepy places around the world. You have decided to send them an article about a creepy place you have recently visited. In your article you should:  present the creepy place  describe your visit  specify why you think it is creepy Write around 250 words. Give your article a title. Article An article is written to be published in an (online) magazine and read by a specific audience who is interested in the topic you are writing about. It can be serious or amusing. Its purpose is to inform, entertain, convince, etc., or to simply captivate the reader. To attract the readers’ attention, your article needs to have a catchy title which gives them an idea of what it is about. This can be a question or a surprising/provocative statement. Your readership should be pulled in right from the beginning and never lose interest while reading the rest of the article. Include descriptions, anecdotes, examples and your opinion when appropriate. The ending should give your readers the feeling that they have not wasted their time reading it. It could be a question, an answer to a question or a summary. It could also give them something to think about or encourage them to take action. To achieve all of the above, use lively, expressive language and involve your readers with direct and rhetorical questions, imperatives and exclamations. Depending on the topic and your readership, the language should be formal, neutral or personal.  See also p. 44. These are the main points to remember when writing an article:  Give your article a catchy title.  Write an introduction that pulls the reader right in.  Involve your readership.  Start a new paragraph for each new aspect or idea given in the content points (bullet points).  Link the paragraphs: The reader should never lose interest in what you are writing.  Finish your article by giving the reader something to think about.
