176 WRITING COACH Writing coach Formal email You write formal emails to give or ask for information, respond to a request, apologise, complain, make suggestions, or apply for a job. The recipient is usually someone that you do not know so well or do not know at all. Your email should be polite and to the point. Use set phrases if appropriate and avoid colloquial language and contractions.  See also p. 40.
