83 TIME: How has this campaign changed the way you see yourself? Barbie Ferreira: It’s really a strange thing. Kids made fun of me for the way I looked, and I didn’t have many friends. For so long I tried going on diets and hated my hips even when I was in first grade. I was so insecure, and I had no one to look up to who could make me feel like my dreams could come true. I know so many gorgeous women who inspired me, and I hope that in the future there will be girls who can dream about something without worrying about the things that they can’t change. Why did you think that you couldn’t become a model or actress because of your body? When I was younger and really interested in acting, I looked at all the women on TV, and even the ones who played ‘geeks’ 7 or ‘less attractive’ roles, they all looked similar because they were extremely attractive and their bodies were perfect. I didn’t understand, and I thought I looked frumpy 8 . I think a lot of girls feel the same way. The media should show us like we really are as a society. How do you deal with mean comments on your social media sites? There will always be people who say things about others. I think I saw a Kendall Jenner picture and the comment next to it was “fat”, and I thought, “Wow, that makes no sense, but people can say anything on the internet.” I really, really never take internet talk to heart. The amount of positive messages that move me to tears is so much bigger than the amount of negative ones. Would you like to be called something other than ‘curvy’ or ‘plus-size’? People don’t usually think of curvy models as real models. But everyone who is called a ‘curvy model’ or a ‘plus-size’ model shows the limits of modelling. We’re trying to get rid of these labels and just be models of all shapes and sizes. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the words ‘curvy’ or ‘plus-size’ and I don’t think being bigger is anything wrong. I believe curvy and plus-size models will simply be models in the future and nobody will think about shape and size anymore. 7 geek: hier: Außenseiter/in, Streber/in 8 frumpy: schäbig, unattraktiv Statements T F First four words 0 Even as a teenager, Barbie knew she was going to be a model.
