The first competition for athletes in wheelchairs took place in 1948 during the Olympic Games in London. Dr Guttmann organized special games for disabled athletes and tried to help veterans or people who were wounded during the World War II. This was a milestone in Paralympics history. The first Paralympic Games took place in Rome in 1960 with 400 athletes from 23 countries. From this time on, they have taken place every four years. In 1976, the first Winter Games in Paralympics history were held in Sweden. Along with the Summer Games, the Winter Games take place every four years. Since the Summer Games of Seoul, South Korea, in 1988 and the Winter Games in Albertville, France, in 1992, the Games have also taken place in the same cities as the regular Olympic Games. In 1960, different organisations which worked for disabled people had the idea of creating one special organisation called “International Sport Organisation for the Disabled (IOSD)”. 1.
