The artwork by Martin Kippenberger consisted of a bucket that stood under a wooden tower. Inside the bucket, the artist had sprayed paint to make it look like rainwater. 2 Since the cleaner thought that the bucket was just dirty and didn’t realise that this was part of the artwork, she decided to make it look brand new. There have been a few other cases of artwork thought to be garbage. For example, in 2001 British artist Damien Hirst collected bottles, ashtrays and coffee cups to arrange them on the floor. 3 Although the artwork known as “Untitled” looked like garbage left after a party, it actually was designed to show the life of an artist. 4 When a cleaner noticed the “mess” after arriving for work at the Eyestorm Gallery in London the next morning, he decided to clean it up. “ 5 As soon as I saw everything, I was shocked. It didn’t look like art to me. I thought it was just very dirty.” 6 Even though his work of art was put in the bin, the artist was able to laugh about it. 7 But one critic of modern art said, “ 8 As the cleaner is able to say what is real art and what is garbage, he should be an art critic! He was right to put garbage in the bin.” Name of the artist Year, city Title of the artwork Elements of the artwork What the cleaner did Martin Kippenberger b) Rewrite the beginnings of eight sentences from the text above in your exercise book.
