Unit 1 0 Quantifiers: a lot of / lots of much – many You use quantifiers such as “a lot of”, “lots of”, “much” and “many” to talk about amounts, degrees and quantities. There aren’t a lot of / lots of sights in this city. There isn’t a lot of / lots of snow in my country. Note: For questions starting with “How …?” you must use “ How much …? / How many …?”. You use much for uncountable nouns and many for countable nouns. You can use them in positive and negative sentences as well as in questions . With much you use singular , with many plural . In colloquial English, you rather use lots of/a lot of in positive statements. Negative sentences: There isn’t much time left left to get on the plane. We didn’t have much snow this year. There aren’t many wom e n in our group. There aren’t many sight s in this city. You can’t see many wild bird s in winter. Questions: Is there much snow in your country? How much money do we need for the journey? Are there many sight s in your hometown? How many student s are going to fly to New Zealand? How many wild bird s live in this area?
