Reporting questions We can report yes-no-questions (Do you …? /Has she …? /Did he …? /Will you …?) and WH-questions ( W hat/ W hen/ W here/ W hy/ W ho/ H ow …?). If the reporting verb is in the present tense (She asks …/He wants to know …), the tense of the verb in the reported question stays the same . “ Have you tried bungee jumping?” “When did you start having sleeping problems?”   She asks Tom if he has tried bungee jumping. He wants to know when she started having sleeping problems. If the reporting verb is in the past tense (He asked …/ She wanted to know …), the tense of the verb in the reported question changes . This is called backshift . (See G3, p. 137, are  was/were, can  could, …) “ Are you afraid of heights?” “When can you start?”   He asked me if I was afraid of heights. She wanted to know when he could start. Unit 5 Used to + base form thinking back to old times With used to we can tell about what it was like in old times.
