More than 50 years ago, the US astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong became the first people to walk on the moon. On 21 July in 1969, Armstrong stepped onto the surface of the moon. As he did so, he spoke the famous words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” A How did they get to the moon, and how long did it take them? 2. The simple reason is that it had never been done before, and it was a big step for countries, and their space programmes, to be the first to land on the moon’s surface. The US was competing with the Soviet Union in the so-called “space race”. This race started when the Soviets, their enemy during the Cold War, launched the first Soviet Sputnik satellite in 1957. B When did the first moon landing happen, and who was involved? 3. The US astronauts were launched into space in a Saturn V rocket, which carried them out of Earth’s gravity. The Apollo 11 mission had three spacecraft: the Command Module Columbia, a Service Module and the Lunar Module Eagle. It took them four days, six hours and 45 minutes to reach the moon. C What did they do on the moon, and what was their job? 4. While many people see the lunar landing mainly as an outstanding technological achievement, others value it for scientific reasons. The aim was to make it possible for humans to live and work in a lunar environment. The astronauts carried out experiments on the surface and brought back samples of moon soil and broken rock to be studied on Earth. D Why was the moon landing so important for the USA? b) Were you right? Listen to the audio and check your answers. w6w69t 1 2 2.24 7322gg Info What is the “moon”?
