Language in use: What is political correctness? You are going to read a text about political correctness. In most lines of the text there is a word that should not be there. Write that word in the space provided after each line. Some lines are correct. Indicate these lines with a tick ( ü ). There are two examples at the beginning. Political correctness is the result of a development pattern in society that pattern 0 wants to promote equality and respect. The term political correctness ü 00 in its present meaning way was first brought up by feminist and left-wing Q1 movements in the US in the 1970s. Before the new term “politically Q2 correct” was used to describe the way in which dictatorial regimes Q3 prescribed the use of certain useful expressions to cover up what they Q4 did not want to express openly only. Q5 What PC means in effect is that people should change the way they Q6 express themselves so that no other people, especially underprivileged Q7 groups like women, ethnic minorities, etc. should hardly be offended. Q8 In addition, PC wants to correct out political bias and tries to promote fair Q9 and respectful behaviour. Q10 Over the years politically correct language has become the object of Q11 ridicule as it uses language patterns that do not represent themselves Q12 what they are not supposed to express. Q13 However noble the first promoters were, many people think that the Q14 present focus on political correctness means taking things too far away. Q15 What started out as a reaction to discrimination has not turned out to be Q16 a language that is riddled with unusual and sometimes complicated Q17 constructions which are sometimes hard to understand. Q18 Political correctness is never extremely important in political discussions Q19 and in the media. If you do not comply with the rules of PC you will Q20 soon be stigmatised and – in many cases – excluded from the political Q21 discourse level.
