Lives at home. Out most evenings, sometimes with girls, usually with his friends. Most week- ends at all-night parties. First given a pill by a friend at a party. Soon started taking more most weekends because everyone else did and because it helped against feeling tired. Always feels completely down on Mondays. Age 55 Doctor, unmarried, lives alone above his surgery. For a long time has been unhappy about being totally overworked under lousy conditions. As a doctor has easy access to dangerous drugs. Two years ago, when depressed, took morphine. After that turned to morphine more and more often whenever things seemed too much. Now dependent on it. Age 46 Secretary in small office. Lives in small house with husband and children. Started drinking at sixteen. Had to drink a lot whenever with boys to overcome her shyness. Became worried about drinking too much and tried to stop. Took to tranquillizers to reduce tension of not drinking but soon went back to drinking as well. Lost friends, became aggressive, often trouble with family. Denies she is an alcoholic. Also has to lie to doctor to get enough pills. Age 32 Unemployed, “on the dole”. Lives in flat. Started taking pills while at school, soon dependent on them. Often smoked pot as well. At sixteen tried heroin. First few shots unpleasant, but continued until he seemed to like it. Left school and found office job. Lost job be- cause absent too often.
