Brutal methods are used to break the will of “enemies” of the state and suppress basic human rights. The longer the victim tries to hold out, the more cruel the punishment becomes, until the victim gives in and “confesses”. The police arrived in the middle of the night. They fired tear gas, kicked down the door and began rounding up the people in the house. A small group of people had gathered to mourn the death of a 15-year-old boy who had died in police custody. Everyone in the house, including three boys between the ages of 11 and 15, were forced into police vans. The 11-year-old boy was picked up and thrown against the door. At the police station, all three were beaten up. One had three teeth and an arm broken, another was left with bruised eyes and the third had a badly swollen and cut lip. Three days later they were released. The police denied having any record of their detention. It has been practised with varying degrees of brutality for many centuries. Most people think that torture is a part of history, but in fact it still goes on everywhere. Amnesty International has proof of the use of torture in recent years in over 60 countries, ranging from Turkey and Chile to Indonesia and Mexico, from Iraq and Iran to China.
