prisoner of conscience: politische/r Gefangene/r Where do the prisoners come from? Prisoners of conscience are held in nearly half the countries of the world. In 50 of these, people can be put in prison without trial. The death penalty is still carried out in 78 nations, and prisoners are tortured in one out of every three countries. Who works for Amnesty International? Men and women who want everyone to be free to express their own political opinions and to practise their religion in their own way. Am- nesty International members include: politi- cians, factory workers, doctors, housewives, lawyers, farmers, journalists, teachers and students. In other words – people like YOU. How does it work? When news of an arrest reaches Amnesty, the facts are examined to find out if the arrested is a prisoner of conscience. The prisoner is then “adopted” by one of the world-wide Amnesty groups. Letters are sent to governments, leading newspapers, and the prisoner’s family and friends. Members collect signatures for interna- tional petitions and raise money to send relief, such as medicine, food and clothing, to the prisoners and their families. If prisoners are tortured or facing the death penalty, Amnesty organises a flood of telegrams and letters to be sent to the government responsible. How you can help Many people feel strongly that political impris- onment, torture and executions are wrong, but believe that there is little they can do. Amnesty International has shown that this is not so. If you wish to support the work of Amnesty, then become a member of the organisation. Every- one’s help is needed in the struggle for human rights all over the world. 197 6 Compact unit 6: Stand up for your rights! Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
