Language for discussion: Ways of emphasising Here are some of the points made by the speakers in 2 . The actual words they used were more emphatic. 3 Most countries in the world are members of the United Nations, which is concerned with the promotion and protection of human rights. Still, many countries are not living up to the standards set by the international community. 4 What is an NGO? Frequently, the fate of those who publicly denounce human rights abuses or work as human rights watchdogs is arrest, abduction, torture and worse. Nigerian human rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, for example, was executed despite massive international protests in November 1995. In China, people are arrested just for knowing someone who cam- paigns for human rights and can find them- selves, without charge or trial, doing up to four years of “re-education through labour”. Condi- tions are often harsh, with long hours of hard labour, poor food and ill-treatment for those who “resist reform”. The work of publicizing human rights violations and bringing pressure on offending govern- ments often falls to non-governmental organi- zations (NGOs). At the international level, NGOs such as Amnesty International (winner of the Nobel Prize for Peace for 1977), the International Committee of the Red Cross and Human Rights Watch conduct on-site investiga- tions, disseminate detailed reports and lead campaigns in international and domestic forums. NGOs vary in how they are organized. Some are made up solely of volunteers or staff members. Others have restricted membership, some NGOs have members who participate in or contribute financially to the organization’s activities. Amnesty International is the largest organization of this kind, with more than 1.1 million members in 150 countries. • Listen again and change the sentences to what you hear.
