TIP Sentence completion In this type of task you have to complete a number of gapped sentences by choosing the right words for the gaps. It is essential that you also bear in mind the number of words allowed. Usually, the limit is FOUR WORDS. Do not exceed this limit because that would make your answer INCORRECT. Proceed as follows: • Make good use of the 45-second preparation time by carefully reading the incomplete sentences and by trying to guess the missing words before the listening starts. • Look at the words before and after the gap to decide on the type of word or phrase needed. Ask yourself whether it is a noun, a verb, an adjective or adverb, etc. that is required. In question 6, for example, only a phrase starting with an infinitive is suitable – because of the modal verb can right before the gap. • Keep in mind that the expressions you hear will not always fit in the gap. You may have to paraphrase them so that they don’t exceed the limit of four words and fit the context of the sentence. • If you can’t think of an answer during the first listening, come back to it during the second one. • At the end, read through the sentences with your solutions to make sure that the words you have chosen make sense in the context of the entire sentence. 191 5 Compact unit 5: From the medical world Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
