Grammar station: Adjectives and -ing forms in descriptive writing 10 When several adjectives come before a noun, you have to put them in a certain order. Opinion adjectives (good, nice, beautiful) usually go before descriptive adjectives: If you have several descriptive adjectives , they come in the following order: number – size – shape – age – colour – origin – material – purpose or type The past simple , on the other hand, is used to show a series of short events which happened one after the other. The -ing form is sometimes used to emphasise the fact that an action was going on at a particular time . This can be a participle or a full past progressive form. These -ing forms are often used in descriptive writing. They make a text more dynamic and show that busy actions are all going on at the same time . The use of participles avoids the use of the full past progressive forms and makes the text easier to read. Position of adjectives Examples: all those boring grey faces the most beautiful blue eyes you have ever seen Examples: twentieth century urban blues music a small green plastic bag new American Jungle songs brand-new designer clothes countless ice-cold beers  -ing forms in descriptive writing Examples: In the club they went straight to the chill-out zone. Martin hit the bar and bought two fizzy mineral waters. It was dark and Glen pulled a small green plastic bag out of his Y-fronts. It contained four pills with a Playboy bunny stamped on them. They swallowed one each and washed them down with water. Three girls sat down close to them. Examples: When James and I started seeing each other, I was at college doing a secretarial course and he was already working , so he used to pay for everything. (I was at college doing a secretarial course = I was at college and I was doing a secretarial course.) Examples: Glen watched them dancing with each other, Lorraine blocking out all the world, focussing on Yvonne, giving her friend everything. His pill was kicking in, and the music, which he had had a resistance to, was getting in to him from all sides, surging through his body in waves, defining his emotions. Before, it had seemed jerky and disjointed, it was pushing and pulling at him, irritating him. Now, he was going with it, his body bubbling and flowing . 14 Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
