ROGER I think discipline at school is very important be- cause there would be no learning without it. We have rules for everything in life. Every day be- fore I get to school I have already obeyed lots of rules on the way there. Since there are rules every- where, I can’t imagine school without discipline. I like teachers who keep strict order best because then I know exactly what to expect. I’m tired of discussing things at school. I want teachers to tell me what to do. Talking about problems is just a waste of time because teachers also have to keep to certain rules. I also know that I’m sometimes very lazy. May- be I wouldn’t learn a foreign language if I didn’t have to. Perhaps I wouldn’t learn anything be- cause it’s more fun to watch TV, play football or listen to music with friends. That’s why I can’t imagine a school without discipline. It simply would not work. MAUREEN Too much discipline at school is wrong, I think. It becomes impossible to develop my personali- ty when I have to keep to other people’s rules all the time. Take this for example. We were told to read a novel by a famous author. I didn’t like it because I was forced to read it. Things we don’t want are pushed down our throats. And the ef- fect is that you learn very little within a year when you dislike the subject. What I want is a school in which I can pick and choose whenever I want to. And if I don’t feel like doing anything, I should have the chance just to sit and daydream or go for a walk.
