TIP Multiple choice gap-filling A Gap-filling task like this one tests your awareness of the differences in meaning of words and of the different contexts in which words are used. You have to draw on your vocabulary knowledge, your knowledge of grammar, and your understanding of the text in order to fill the gaps. For each gap in the text you are given a choice between four different options (A, B, C and D), but only one of them is correct. The other three are there to make you unsure in your decision or to distract your attention – which is why they are sometimes called “distractors”. By consequence, always bear in mind to make ONE choice only; if you make two or more (even if the correct one is among them), your response will be considered WRONG. Proceed as follows: Glance over the whole text to get an idea of what it is about. • Then read the text • sentence after sentence . Look for clues which tell you what kind of word (noun, verb, adjective, etc.) is missing. Speculate about the missing word. Then look at the proposed gap-filling options: Which of • the four is closest to this meaning? Concentrate on the words before • and after each gap. It is a very common mistake to find a word that fits the text before the gap but not the text after the gap. Therefore, always look at both sides of the gap. If you find it difficult to decide between the options, leave the gap blank for the moment and • allow yourself enough time to come back to it later. If you are unsure of an answer, write it in pencil and also come back to it later. Do not forget to document your choices in the • boxes under the text . DO NOT write the chosen words there. Rather, write the letters (A, B, C or D) corresponding to those words there. 23 1 Extensive unit 1: Pop music Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des V rlags öbv
