b) Now read these two letters applying for the job. Dear Ms Langley, I have seen your advertisement and would like to apply for the job of helper in a summer camp in America. This job would be ideal for me as I am an active and energetic 18-year-old Austrian boy. I am a keen sportsman and have played football for the local club since I was 9. I’m also a member of the school tennis club and was the under-18 champion last year. I’m a strong swimmer too, but I have never tried horse riding, though I would like to learn. I think I speak English well as I spent three months in Manchester as an exchange student. While I was there, I helped my host family run a youth club. I really enjoyed organising quizzes, discos and barbecues for the members, who ranged from 10 to 14 in age. I have had a holiday job in a restaurant, so kitchen duties would not be a problem. I hope you will consider my application and I am looking forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely, Simon Mann Dear Jane, My name’s Carl and I think I’d be great for the job as I’m mad about sports, especially skiing and snowboarding. I sometimes play football though to be honest I’d rather watch it on the TV. A trip to America would be really cool and I’m sure I’d be OK with the kids – I’ve got an 11-year-old sister and I get on all right with her and her mates, even though we used to fall out a lot! I really like computer games and horse riding sounds fun, though it might be a bit scary at first. I can swim – will there be a heated pool at the camp?
