Divergent opinions on package tours 23 I hate backpackers. Sorry if that sounds a bit strong, but they really do get on my nerves. I live in London and everyday on my way to work I have to climb over their rucksacks to get to my seat on the train. And then I have to listen to their conver- sations. They’re so mean, all they talk about is how cheaply they’ve managed to do things and they argue about who pays what down to the last penny. I won’t even mention the smell. There seems to be a competition as to who can last the longest without having a bath. When I go on holiday, I always use a package tour company. It’s so nice having someone else to arrange everything for you. You get to see all the important sites and really appreciate them because you’re not stressed out trying to negotiate in a foreign language. And it’s not so expensive. These days there’s so much competition you can usually get a really good deal. Kay (24) When I was a kid, my parents always took us on package tours in Europe. I never really liked them. I remember being stuck on hot coaches while we whizzed through ten different cities in a day. We saw everything, but we didn’t really see anything. Now I go on holiday with my friends it’s much more fun. We always go backpacking. For a start it’s cheaper so it means you can stay away for longer. But the thing I like most about backpacking is never really knowing where you’re going to be the next day. It makes the holiday much more exciting and you get to meet loads of new people. I’ve got friends from all over the world that I met on my holidays. It’s true that sometimes it can be a bit uncom- fortable and there are nights when I wish I was in a comfortable bed, but you just have to remember that in a few weeks you’ll be home again and you can have as many hot showers and homemade meals as you want.
